Celebrating the 25TH ANNIVERSARY of the REVOLUTIONARY FREAK with A MILLION-YEAR-OLD MINERAL HOWLITE HOUR DISC.
The Freak [S Howlite] has no traditional hands. Instead, the movement itself indicates the time. It has no conventional dial. Instead, a rotating hour disc with a pointer, which completes one full rotation every 12 hours beneath the flying carousel, serves as the hour indication. It has no crown. Time is set by unlocking the safety lock positioned at 6 o’clock and rotating the bidirectional bezel.
For this ultra-limited edition created especially for the North America market, Ulysse Nardin introduces howlite to the Freak for the first time. A naturally occurring mineral distinguished by its white appearance and distinctive gray veining, howlite gives every hour disc its own geological signature.
Approximately 95% of the movement’s components are in motion, creating a constantly evolving mechanical spectacle. Each Freak [S Howlite] is assembled from start to finish by a single Grandes Complications watchmaker at the Ulysse Nardin Manufacture in Switzerland.
Its three-dimensional architecture incorporates two oversized silicon oscillators, each inclined at 20 degrees and featuring silicon balance wheels and DIAMonSIL® escapements. They are connected by Ulysse Nardin’s vertical mechanical differential — the smallest of its kind in the world. To accommodate this complex mechanism, the Freak S extends across six distinct gear planes, compared with the two typically found in conventional mechanical movements, creating its spectacular three-dimensional architecture.
