Benoît Mintiens, the visionary founder of Ressence, brings a fresh perspective to the world of watchmaking, shaped by his background as an industrial designer rather than a traditional horologist. Born in Belgium, Mintiens graduated with a degree in Industrial Design from Antwerp and later earned an MBA. Before venturing into watches, he built an eclectic portfolio designing high-speed trains, aircraft cabins, and medical devices. This diverse experience instilled in him a user-centric approach, prioritizing functionality and ergonomics over conventional watchmaking norms. In 2010, he launched Ressence— a name blending “Renaissance” and “essence”—with a mission to rethink how time is displayed, introducing innovative concepts like the Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS), where rotating discs replace traditional hands.
Unbound by the traditions that dominate Swiss horology, he approached Ressence with a bold, minimalist ethos, creating timepieces that feel both futuristic and intuitive. His standout innovations include the oil-filled dials of the Type 3 and Type 5, enhancing readability by eliminating refraction, and the e-Crown technology in the Type 2, blending mechanical precision with modern convenience. Today, Ressence reflects his philosophy of designing not just products, but relationships—crafting watches that prioritize the wearer’s experience while pushing the boundaries of what a timepiece can be.
