Just like oysters, Blaken Oyster Collection watches protect their precious inner workings with their particularly tough, hard-wearing surface. The patented Blaken coating, resulting from a special stainless steel hardening process, makes the housing and wristband extremely tough and hard-wearing and creates a surface which is eight times harder than the original steel. The original Rolex Oyster model from 1926 was the first waterproof wrist watch in the world and could even be worn while pearl diving. The watch’s centerpiece – the pearl in the oyster, so to speak – is an automatic self-winding mechanism consisting of an oscillating weight which rotates continuously around its own axis either in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction, with a power reserve of approximately 50 hours.
