Retrograde

A hand that travels across the dial in an arc — usually from 90 to 180 degrees — instead of a 360-degree revolution around a centrally fixed point. When a retrograde hand finishes its journey across the dial, it returns instantaneously to begin a new measurement. Retrograde hands can indicate date, day or month in perpetual calendars, but can also be used for hours, minutes or seconds.
