Barrel

This cylindrical receptacle is lined with teeth around its circumference. It holds the mainspring, which is attached at one end to the barrel and at the other to the arbor (axle) on which the barrel turns. Winding the watch turns the barrel, which increases the mainspring’s tension. After winding, the mainspring releases the energy that powers the watch movement.
